Contribution to euro area monetary aggregates

This statistical dataset provides monthly information on the contribution of Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs) resident in Spain to the euro area monetary aggregates and their main counterparts. The monetary aggregates are defined at the euro area level on the basis of the consolidated balance sheet of the MFI sector, and this dataset presents Spain’s national contribution to those aggregates, rather than a national monetary aggregate.

The series cover the M1, M2 and M3 aggregates, defined in terms of the decreasing liquidity of the liabilities of the money-issuing sector (MFIs) vis-à-vis the money-holding sector (euro area residents other than MFIs and central government). M1 (narrow money) comprises currency in circulation and overnight deposits; M2 (intermediate money) adds deposits with an agreed maturity of up to two years and deposits redeemable at notice of up to three months; M3 (broad money) further includes repurchase agreements, money market fund shares/units and debt securities with a maturity of up to two years issued by MFIs. Information is presented in terms of outstanding amounts (stocks), transactions (flows) and year-on-year growth rates.

The dataset also covers the main counterparts of M3, including loans to the private sector, loans to general government, longer-term financial liabilities, net external assets vis-à-vis non-euro area residents and remaining counterparts. The series are expressed in millions of euros and percentages and include, where applicable, calendar and seasonally adjusted data, in line with Eurosystem practices.

The dataset forms part of the harmonised monetary and financial statistics framework of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and is derived from the MFI balance sheet information compiled by the Banco de España, ensuring consistency with data published by the European Central Bank.
