Banco de España balance sheet. Monetary policy operations and their counterparts

This statistical dataset provides monthly information on the balance sheet of the Banco de España and the Eurosystem from a dual perspective: on the one hand, the main balance sheet components by institutional sector and geographical residence; on the other, a specific analytical framework that decomposes the balance sheet into monetary policy operations and their counterparts. The series, available from 1980, are expressed in millions and thousands of euros.

In the first block, the dataset presents the assets and liabilities of the Banco de España broken down by counterparty sector (general government, MFIs, other euro area residents and rest of the world), including loans and credits, debt securities, deposits, currency in circulation, TARGET position and other items.

In the second block, the series present the monetary policy operations of the Banco de España and the Eurosystem, broken down into: main refinancing operations (MRO), longer-term refinancing operations (LTRO), fine-tuning and structural operations, asset purchase programmes and standing facilities. The dataset also includes the counterparts of these operations, structured around autonomous factors (banknotes in circulation, government deposits, gold and net foreign currency assets) and reserves held by credit institutions.

The dataset includes parallel series for the Banco de España and for the Eurosystem as a whole, enabling analysis of the national central bank’s contribution to euro area monetary policy operations. The methodological framework follows the statistical practices of the European Central Bank, ensuring consistency with European monetary and financial reference statistics.
