Monetary financial institutions. Euro area returns

Identifier: BDE-D-000010

Description

This statistical dataset provides the aggregate monthly balance sheets of Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs) resident in Spain, compiled from the harmonised accounting returns submitted to the Banco de España under Regulation ECB/2021/2 on the balance sheet items of credit institutions and of the monetary financial institutions sector (recast) and Guideline ECB/2021/11. The data represent Spain’s national contribution to the aggregated balance sheet of the euro area MFI sector, from which the European Central Bank derives the consolidated balance sheet of euro area MFIs (by netting out inter-MFI positions), which in turn serves as the basis for the compilation of the monetary aggregates.

The dataset results from the integration of the Banco de España statistics and the Other Monetary Financial Institutions (OMFI) statistics, thereby covering the entire resident MFI sector: the Banco de España, MFI credit institutions (banks, savings banks, credit cooperatives and the Instituto de Crédito Oficial, ICO), specialised lending institutions (establecimientos financieros de crédito, EFC), money market funds and electronic money institutions. Since 26 July 2021, under Regulation (EU) 2019/2033 (IFR) and Directive (EU) 2019/2034 (IFD), systemic investment firms (SIFs) have been classified as credit institutions; however, they are not authorised to accept deposits or other repayable funds from the public and therefore do not form part of the money-creating sector (they are classified in S.125 of ESA 2010). They are not included in this dataset (they are, however, included in the statistics based on individual supervisory returns). Data collection is based on a census of all resident MFIs, although the Banco de España may grant exemptions from full reporting to individual institutions provided that the aggregate coverage exceeds 95% of the national MFI balance sheet.

The series, available from December 1989 onwards, present information on MFI assets and liabilities organised by financial instrument (cash, loans and credits, debt securities, investment fund shares, equity holdings, fixed assets, deposits, repurchase agreements, money market fund shares issued, capital and reserves and other balance sheet items). Data are broken down by counterparty institutional sector following the sectorisation rules of the European System of Accounts (ESA 2010) - general government (with a distinction between Central Government and other general government units), MFIs, other resident sectors and rest of the world -, by geographical residence (Spain, EMU excluding Spain and rest of the world) and, where applicable, by currency (euro and non-euro currencies) and by maturity (up to two years).

The series are expressed in millions of euros and correspond to end-of-period outstanding amounts (stocks). The series are published on a monthly basis.
