This statistical dataset provides detailed monthly information on the balance sheet of the Banco de España, compiled from the Eurosystem’s harmonised accounting returns under Regulation ECB/2021/2 on the balance sheet items of credit institutions and of the monetary financial institutions sector (recast), Guideline ECB/2021/11 and the statistical standards of the European System of Central Banks. The Banco de España is one of the two groupings that make up the MFI sector in Spain, alongside the Other Monetary Financial Institutions (OMFI), and its balance sheet is integrated into the aggregate for all resident MFIs, which in turn contributes to the aggregated balance sheet of the euro area.
The series cover the main asset and liability components of the central bank, including international reserves (gold and gold receivables, holdings of special drawing rights and reserve position and other assets vis-à-vis the International Monetary Fund), loans and credits, debt securities, investment fund shares and equity holdings, banknotes and coins in circulation, deposits, repurchase agreements, capital and reserves and other items relevant for monitoring monetary policy, liquidity conditions and financial stability. Data on currency include, in addition to amounts outstanding, a breakdown of banknotes by denomination (€5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and €500) and of coins (from 1 cent to €2), as well as banknotes issued and withdrawn during the period. Breakdowns are presented by financial instrument, counterparty institutional sector following the sectorisation rules of ESA 2010 (MFIs, general government - Central Government and other general government units -, other resident sectors and rest of the world) and geographical residence (Spain, EMU excluding Spain and rest of the world), as well as, where applicable, by currency denomination.
The series, available from January 1962 onwards for the main components, are expressed in millions of euros. Total amounts of banknotes and coins in circulation, issued and withdrawn are reported in thousands of euros, with additional information on the number of units in circulation by denomination. All series correspond to end-of-period outstanding amounts (stocks), are published on a monthly basis and ensure comparability with data published by the European Central Bank and Eurostat.
