This statistical dataset provides the monthly balance sheets of Other Monetary Financial Institutions (OMFIs) resident in Spain, i.e. the MFI sector excluding the Banco de España. Data are compiled from the harmonised accounting returns submitted to the Banco de España under Regulation ECB/2021/2 on the balance sheet items of credit institutions and of the monetary financial institutions sector (recast) and Guideline ECB/2021/11. Together with the Banco de España statistics, it forms the aggregate for all resident MFIs. Data collection is based on a census of all resident OMFIs, although the Banco de España may grant exemptions from full reporting to individual institutions provided that aggregate coverage exceeds 95% of the national balance sheet.
The institutional scope covers MFI credit institutions (banks, savings banks, credit cooperatives and the Instituto de Crédito Oficial, ICO), specialised lending institutions (establecimientos financieros de crédito, EFC), money market funds (MMFs) and electronic money institutions (EMIs). Since 26 July 2021, under Regulation (EU) 2019/2033 (IFR) and Directive (EU) 2019/2034 (IFD), systemic investment firms (SIFs) have been classified as credit institutions; however, they are not authorised to accept deposits or other repayable funds from the public and therefore do not form part of the money-creating sector (they are classified in S.125 of ESA 2010). They are not included in this dataset (they are, however, included in the statistics based on individual supervisory returns). In addition to the aggregate OMFI sector, the dataset publishes separate balance sheets for relevant subgroupings: deposit-taking institutions (ED: banks, savings banks and credit cooperatives), the Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO), specialised lending institutions (EFC), credit institutions that are MFIs combined with specialised lending institutions (referred to as "EC y EFC" in the Statistical Bulletin; this aggregate does not include SIFs, which are not MFIs despite being classified as credit institutions) and money market funds together with electronic money institutions (MMF and EMI).
The series, available from December 1989 onwards, present the composition of assets and liabilities by financial instrument (cash, loans and credits, deposits - transferable, overnight, time, redeemable at notice and repurchase agreements -, debt securities, investment fund shares, equity holdings, capital and reserves and other liabilities), with breakdowns by counterparty institutional sector following the sectorisation rules of ESA 2010 - general government (Central Government and other general government units), MFIs, non-financial corporations, and households and non-profit institutions serving households (NPISH) -, by currency (euro and non-euro currencies) and by geographical residence (Spain, other euro area countries and rest of the world). Loans to households present additional detail by purpose (consumer credit, housing credit, other lending and, within the latter, sole proprietors) and by residual maturity (up to 1 year, between 1 and 5 years and over 5 years). The dataset also includes specific information on credit card lending (convenience credit and extended credit) and syndicated loans to non-financial corporations resident in Spain. Compared with the supervisory statistics, this dataset offers greater detail by counterparty sector and residence, whereas the supervisory statistics provide more granular breakdowns of lending and deposit instruments.
The series are expressed in millions of euros and correspond to end-of-period outstanding amounts (stocks). The series are published on a monthly basis.
