Central Balance Sheet Data Office. Quarterly survey

This dataset brings together the statistical series compiled within the framework of the Quarterly Database of the Central Balance Sheet Office of the Banco de España and provides a broad and detailed view of the economic and financial situation of the institutional sector of non-financial corporations in Spain. Its design allows for continuous monitoring of the recent evolution of business activity and economic results from a dual perspective - both aggregated and microeconomic - making it an essential source for short-term and structural analysis of the productive sector.

The information contained in the dataset enables an integrated analysis of the balance sheet and income statement of non-financial corporations, as well as a wide range of ratios and indicators related to activity, profitability, indebtedness, financial burden, and business soundness. This integration facilitates the assessment of the economic and financial evolution of firms within a coherent and time-comparable framework, establishing the dataset as a standard reference in economic research and macroeconomic and sectoral analysis.

The statistical series include key variables such as gross value added, net turnover, output, employment, and personnel expenses, together with various measures of economic performance, financial structure, indebtedness, and solvency. The institutional coverage encompasses the entire group of non-financial corporations, understood as producers of non-financial goods and services, in accordance with the delimitation used in official statistics. Data are presented with breakdowns by productive activity and firm size at a high level of aggregation, reflecting the relatively small sample size available (around 1,000 firms).

From a methodological standpoint, the dataset is compiled in accordance with the statistical criteria of the Banco de España, in line with the European System of Accounts (ESA) and Eurostat’s recommendations for structural business statistics. Time series are published at quarterly and annual frequencies, using homogeneous units - such as monetary levels, percentages, or counts of firms and employees - depending on the nature of each variable, thereby ensuring consistency and comparability over time.

Given its quarterly temporal coverage and its integration within the statistics of the Central Balance Sheet Office of the Banco de España, this statistical dataset is fundamental for the analysis of the business cycle, the assessment of corporate profitability and indebtedness, and the study of financial stability. It also constitutes a key tool for economic research and for the design, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies, as well as for macroeconomic and sectoral analysis of non-financial corporations in Spain.
