The statistics on international reserves and foreign currency liquidity provide monthly information on the stocks of Spain’s reserve assets, as well as on other foreign currency denominated assets and liabilities of the Banco de España and the Public Treasury. Reserve assets are defined as external assets that are readily available to and controlled by the monetary authorities for intervening in foreign exchange markets to influence the exchange rate, and for other related purposes.
The series included make it possible to analyse certain details such as the reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), monetary gold, convertible foreign currencies and other related assets, as well as predetermined or contingent future drains on foreign currency liquidity.
In accordance with International Monetary Fund guidelines, this statistical information is presented within a standardised reporting framework (the reserves data template), which is designed to enhance transparency and to improve the comparative analysis of economies’ external liquidity positions.
