Central Balance Sheet Data Office. VIME

Central Balance Sheet Office VIME is an experimental dataset developed by the Banco de España in collaboration with the National Statistics Institute (INE), which enables the analysis of the territorial distribution of Spanish non-financial corporations with multiple locations. Its purpose is to provide a more accurate view of the geographical location of economic activity and associated employment, distinguishing between companies’ registered offices and their production sites.

The information is compiled within the framework of the Central Balance Sheet Office of the Banco de España, applying homogeneous methodological criteria and data-cleaning processes carried out by analysts and experts, and is integrated into the official statistical system. The institutional coverage of the dataset is limited to non-financial corporations resident in Spain, while the geographical coverage spans the entire national territory, allowing for detailed analysis of the territorial deployment of business activity.

The dataset facilitates the study of the effective location of economic activity and employment, overcoming the limitations of analyses based exclusively on companies’ registered offices. This perspective is particularly relevant for regional analysis, the assessment of productive structures, and the understanding of the spatial distribution of the business sector in a context characterised by firms with complex organisational structures and presence across multiple territories.

The statistics, which provide annual data, are updated twice a year and disseminated exclusively in aggregated form, ensuring the anonymisation of business information and the confidentiality of statistical units. The time coverage extends to the most recent years available. Owing to its innovative and experimental nature, and its integration within the statistics of the Central Balance Sheet Office of the Banco de España, this dataset constitutes a reference tool for territorial analysis of economic activity, business employment, and the geographical location of non-financial corporations in Spain.
